The Iowa State Fair is underway in Des Moines.
Alan Brown of Hampton is a member of the State Fair Board of Directors, and tells Radio on the Go News that improvements continue on the fairgrounds.
“Barns here at the Iowa State Fair are just icons of the state for their architecture and how long that they have been there. And we want to do everything we can to preserve what they are. They get update them with lighting, electricity, stalling, bathrooms are a huge thing. And this year we, for the most part, have completed the sheep barn. And we’ll be moving from barn to barn as the next few years go on here being able to renovate them. Next is the horse barn. And in fact, at the July meeting we approved the purchase of the new stalls for the barns.”
Brown says this year’s Grandstand entertainment is more of a mix than in past years.
“We look at what’s happening in Iowa as far as other concerts and performances, and we try to match or fill the need of what’s out there. If we had, for example, a lot of country in the state, then maybe we’ll move into a different style of music and kind of fill in the gaps there so that everybody in Iowa’s got a choice to make and can go see the concert that they really want to see.”
The Iowa State Fair runs through August 18th.
