North Butler alumna Kiya Johnson took her talents on the softball diamond to the college ranks at Kirkwood Community College this past year. Kirkwood went 55-14 overall, 26-2 ICCAC and reached the NJCAA Division II World Series Championship in 2024.

Johnson on her first year with the Eagles.

“At first it was a big adjustment, coming in and practices were much more intense and the level of competition was a little higher,” says Johnson. “Throughout the year it was different. By the end of the year I really loved it. I loved the competition level. I made some new friends and really bonded with some of my teammates, which was one of my favorite parts.”

In her senior season with the Bearcats was an everyday pitcher and recorded a 1.72 ERA and 192 strikeouts. In her freshman season with the Eagles, Johnson transitioned to a different defensive role as second basemen.

Johnson says her Dad was her role model during her position change at the next level.

“Transitioning from high school pitching all the time, not really playing other positions, to in the spring playing second base and hitting. He was there for me when I had tough times out in the field and was frustrated, and when I had good times out in the field. I appreciate that so much. He was kind of my role model through the whole thing and encouraged me to keep going and reminded me that nothing’s easy. I’m very grateful for that.”

Johnson in 56 games, batted .320 with 37 RBI and 12 stolen bases, which was tied for second most on the team.

Johnson says she hopes to pitch again but her focus is helping the team.

“I enjoy pitching and I do hope that does become a part of my role again. I also am okay with doing what benefits my team the best because I just want to use my skills to help our outcome the best I can in hopes of helping us win.”

Kirkwood returns to the diamond for their fall season in September.
