AGWSR Football to debut new offense

The AGWSR football team is working on installing a revamped offense.

After running a pro-style offense the last few years, Head Coach James Koop says the team will run a variation of the Wing-T in the shotgun formation. He’s confident in his team’s ability to execute the changes under Offensive Coordinator Bill Heubner.

“It’s part of the Wing-T playbook,” Koop says. “And Coach Heubner, when I was the defensive coordinator at Alden, Coach Heubner is the only team back during the 50-point rule that had a team 50-point my defense. Which that just annoys you as a defensive coordinator because the game ends early. I mean, it was in the fourth quarter, but still. I mean, those are just things I don’t forget. Nashua-Plainfield has run the Wing-T. And I don’t know if we beat them in three years that I’ve been head coach. It’s obviously a good offense. There’s been a lot of good teams that have run the Wing-T, so it’s gonna be a variation of that. And there’s no secrets to it. I’m excited to see where that goes.”

The Cougars are working to fill some gaps left by the graduation of running back Kaden Abbas and lineman Aiden Heitland, who were multi-year starters. But they’ll have the luxury of experienced senior quarterback Collin Willems.

“He’s really picked up the new offense well, and he’s listening to Coach Heubner and making the right reads and things like that. The bigger thing there is who’s number two. Collin didn’t have any injuries last year and I’ll just knock on every trunk in the forest right now. We need to keep him healthy because right now number two is a freshman. We might have to move an upperclassman from a different position to number two. We don’t know for sure what we’re gonna have to do with that yet. It’s good to have the returning senior and a captain in that role. And then just hopefully we can keep him healthy all season.”

The Cougars are coming off a 3-6 season and will open Friday, August 30 at Lake Mills.
