Road construction season continues across Iowa.

Iowa Department of Transportation Spokesman Pete Hjelmstad says always be aware of your surroundings.

“You know, there’s so much going on right now. School is starting, we’re gonna be having the athletics starting, and there’s just a lot going on. Be aware that road construction is still happening. It’s gonna be happening into November. And be aware of it. Watch out for it. Check the 511ia.org website or the 511ia app. Be prepared. You know what’s coming, you can plan around it, and you need to give yourself extra time, or if you want to find a different route, you can do that.”

Hjelmstad provides an update on the resurfacing of Highway 3 from the west side of Hampton to Interstate 35.

“They have started the resurfacing work. They do what they call a cold in place. And what that is is they mill off the top part of the asphalt. And it goes into a machine and gets mixed with oil and then put back down. And that forms a really good base for the contractor to come back up and put the two lifts or two layers, I guess, of asphalt down. That work is going on right now. It will probably continue into late October and that will be controlled with a pilot car and flaggers.”

That’s Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa DOT.
