West Fork Athletics Unite Behind Veteran Leadership

West Fork softball made its first ever state tournament appearance and baseball reached a district final this summer.

As the Warhawks has begun their second week of fall sports practices, Activities Director Tyler Borchardt shares the influence of veteran coaching.

“Our coaches, we haven’t really had a lot of turnover this last year, so a lot of them are coming back,” says Borchardt. “They’re going on year three, year four of being involved with our athletic department. Any time that happens, you get more consistence. The kids know what to expect. Parents know what to expect. I think that all translates to success.”

The West Fork school district brings together seven different communities including Chapin, Dougherty, Meservey, Rockwell, Swaledale, Sheffield and Thornton.

Borchardt says the communities have a shared pride for the school district, and student athletes do a good job of representing the area.

“Tradition here from past schools, that’s SCMT, SC, Rockwell, Swaledale, you name it there’s a lot of pride with that to. That’s one cool thing about our district as a whole is everyone in all these communities they have that pride. They have that pride for their own town but also they have it for our district as a whole too. It’s really cool to see that. It’s definitely a fun experience getting to see the kids all around this north central area, come together and compete as one.”

“The Rockwell gym just got resurfaced. We did our one in Sheffield this last fall. Rockwell’s campus, is where our junior high programs are. We also have a lot of our youth teams play up there. Just about getting wrapped up, I believe they just finished some painting on that. This summer we also put up some netting out at the baseball and softball field. We really focused on our concession area, along with up the third baseline along the softball field, to try to help with player safety.”

The first athletic event of the school year will be a Warhawk volleyball match at home against Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Thursday, August 29.
