Iowa Falls-Alden will see a familiar leader taking on an expanded role this fall, as former Riverbend Middle School Principal Jeff Burchfield is the new activities director. Burchfield was the principal at Riverbend for 20 years and takes over for longtime AD Pat Norem who is filling a need as the new high school math teacher at IFA.
Burchfield’s mindset entering the new position and on the value of involvement.
“I am really excited about my new role, I know the community well, and activities has always been near and dear to my heart,” says Burchfield. “Participation and encouraging all of our students to be actively engaged in activities. It’s always been our belief that students who are involved in activities are more connected to school, and students who are more connected to school are more successful in school. Ultimately, that’s what we’re striving for, success in all activities, success on the playing field or court, and success in the classroom.”
Burchfield on alumni that have returned to coach programs.
“Isn’t that great. They have been here and seen where our program has been. They have a connection to that program, to that history and to the community. All they want to do is give back to our community and our student athletes as well.”
Burchfield provides updates on facility projects.
“Building a culture and climate within your activities programs, just having the air conditioning in the buildings really adds to a much more positive learning environment and working environment for our students. We are in the process of building a new transportation building and so with that there will be some batting cages that will be a part of that. There will be an opportunity for students to be able to utilize some indoor facilities there.”
Refreshing the turf at Cadet Field is also on the projects to-do list entering this school year.
The first athletic event of the fall season will be a Cadet volleyball match at home against South Hardin on Tuesday, and will air on 99 The Wave.
