The #14 (2A) Grundy Center volleyball team went 3-0 at a home quad to begin the season Tuesday. The Spartans earned 2-0 sweeps of AGWSR, #12 (2A) Hudson and #14 (4A) Waverly-Shell Rock.
AGWSR went 1-2, beating Waverly-Shell Rock 2-1 and falling to Hudson 2-0.
The Spartans began the season with a tight battle with NICL-Central opponent Hudson. Grundy Center pulled away to win 21-18, 21-17.
Grundy Center’s closest match was against Waverly-Shell Rock. The Spartans needed bonus points, but battled to a 23-21, 21-18 win.
The Spartans quickly took care of conference opponent AGWSR, winning 21-11, 21-10.
The Cougars got in the win column with an unusual 2-1 win over Waverly-Shell Rock. After falling 21-17 in set 1, the Cougars forced a third set by winning 21-14. But in the third set, the Cougars pulled off the most lopsided set win of the night, 15-3.
Hudson won a close first set over AGWSR 21-19, and took set 2 21-14 to get the sweep.
At 1-2, AGWSR will return home Thursday to host a triangular with Iowa Falls-Alden and South Tama.
At 3-0, Grundy Center will return to action Tuesday, September 3 at #5 (2A) South Hardin, which will air on 99 The Wave.
