Around 5pm Wednesday the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department was called out on the report of a van striking a train on the south side of Alden. A 2014 Honda Odyssey driven by 36-year-old Sandra Peguero Guerrero from the Dominican Republic was traveling southbound on Hardin County Highway S-27 north of the Canadian National Railroad crossing, while at the same time a CN train was traveling eastbound.

The railroad track signs were engaged, and the audible sound was engaged. The train gave audible warnings of the crossing. The van driven by Guerrero failed to yield and was struck on the passenger side, knocking it about 30 feet down the highway. The van was totaled, and two passengers in the van were transported by Iowa Falls EMS to Hansen Family Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

Guerrero was cited for failing to properly stop at a railroad crossing and for not having a valid driver’s license.

Assisting agencies were the Alden Fire Department and the Hardin County “E” Squad.
