A benefit will be held for 4-year-old Oz Guerrero at Pit Row in Hampton on September 14th.

Oz is the son of Dave and Whitney Guerrero of Mason City. Dave graduated from Hampton-Dumont in 1999.

Oz was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in November of last year, which has now spread to his lungs.

Whitney Guerrero tells Radio on the Go News that Oz has been receiving treatments at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

“He is a superstar. He really is. He is resilient. He is determined and he is tough as nails. He doesn’t let anything get him down at all. He’s smart. He’s very, very smart. He knows that he has cancer and he calls his chemo his special medicine and he calls his tumors monsters. And he knows his medicine. He gives himself his own medicine. You know, he gets his port changed and his NG changed. And you know, he’s, he’s gone through a hell of a lot and he is one tough kid.”

Whitney says her and her husband have a support network to help them.

“I’ve tried to find a balance and I have a lot of support. So I reach out to people, I have a sponsor, I have my AA people, I have a counselor. I reach out to all those people to make sure that my mental health is where it needs to be. I get up at four in the morning and people think I’m crazy, but I do that because between four and six is my time for me to like brush my teeth, wash my face, have five cups of coffee if I want and get ready for the day because you know, once Oz is up, it’s all about him.”

The benefit at Pit Row for Oz Guerrero is September 14th and will include a bags tournament, silent auction, food, and a DJ.
