The AGWSR football team is looking to bounce back from Friday’s 20-0 loss at Lake Mills when it begins district play in Week 2 by hosting BCLUW.
Head Coach James Koop says while it was a tough loss to begin the season, it was a quality opponent that revealed some areas for improvement.
“There’s nothing about the game that we have to reinvent the wheel on,” Koop says. “We just have to get better at little things and credit Lake Mills, because they’re a playoff qualifier. Last year, they made it to the second round. They beat the second place team in our district last year in the first round on the road and on offense, they started 10 out of 11 seniors. So they have a very good team. I would expect to see them to continue to win. So it was a good test against a really good opponent. And it showed us some things that we obviously have to work on, not major things again, but little things that we have to be more efficient at if we’re going to come out on the other end of the win-loss column.”
Koop says defensively, there were some key missed tackles that led to scores, and some schematic adjustments will need to be made.
“We need to tackle a little bit better in situations. We have to be better at doing our own responsibility. I preach on that a lot with the guys, you know, on our defense, everybody’s got a gap. It’s pretty common with a lot of defenses and you can’t do somebody else’s job. You’ve got to do your own and you’ve got to be good enough at doing your own that you can make the play when you have to, and when it’s coming your way. So we have to do that better. And then I think there were certain situations where there was a little bit of confusion and we had some misalignments on the defensive front line.”
The Week 2 game against BCLUW will be the home and district opener. Last season, the Cougars won 26-15. The Comets are coming off a 19-7 loss to East Marshall.
Friday’s game will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
