A critical change for this year’s AGWSR volleyball team is the change from Class 1A to Class 2A. It’s the first season in Class 2A for the program under Head Coach Jill Smith.

In 2022 and 2023, the Cougars were ranked in Class 1A throughout the majority of those seasons despite being under .500, and earned home-court advantage in the postseason because of it. However, the Cougars will likely need to put together a stronger record to earn the same luxury in the Class 2A postseason, according to Smith.

“It’s something that’s outside of our control,” Smith says. “You know, our next few classes coming through are bigger, so we’ll probably remain in 2A for the next few years. So putting together some key wins will be important going into the postseason as to where the state sends us. I have no idea where, you know, because we haven’t been in 2A, so just take it as it comes.”

The Cougars will have a chance at some resume-building wins when they host #10 (1A) Gladbrook-Reinbeck Thursday, at Saturday’s tournament at #3 (1A) North Tama and at #14 (2A) Grundy Center on Tuesday, September 10.
