Iowa State University Extension Human Sciences Specialist Amy Jones offers tips for those looking to maintain healthy eating habits as summer winds down.
Jones says certain foods should be consumed daily.
“The common question is, are there any foods we should eat every single day?” Jones says. “There are food groups we should eat every day, but not necessarily single foods. While it is tempting to believe eating a few special foods daily will optimize our health and prevent disease, the real secret to meeting all of our nutritional needs is to choose a variety of whole or minimally processed foods in each of the five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy.”
Jones says unprocessed or minimally processed foods provide the best nutritional value.
“In fruits and vegetables, choose whole and minimally processed versions of fruits and vegetables rather than juices or choices with added sugars and salt. In the grains group, prioritize whole grains such as whole wheat, oats, barley, and quinoa over refined grains such as white bread and pastries.”
