The AGWSR volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit and defeated #8 (1A) Gladbrook-Reinbeck 3-2 at home in Thursday’s NICL-West opener. The Cougars won by set scores of 24-26, 25-19, 16-25, 25-11, 15-10.
The Cougars built a 16-8 lead in the first set, but the Rebels scored eight straight to tie it. Trailing 24-19, the Cougars scored five straight to force bonus points, but GR scored the final two points for a 1-0 lead.
In set 2, AGWSR led 14-12, and stretched the advantage for the win. The Rebels were in control in the second half of set 3, and took a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars led 11-8, and scored seven straight to take firm control in the fourth set to force set 5. In the deciding set, GR was in control early, and led 7-5. But AGWSR scored four straight to take a lead they held onto for the rest of the way.
Elise Olson and Brylea Metzgar each had eight kills. AGWSR (4-2, 1-0 NICL-W) will return to action Saturday at a tournament at #9 (1A) North Tama.
