The Hampton-Dumont-CAL football team scored in a variety of ways in a 35-7 home win over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in Week 2.

The Bulldogs built a 14-0 halftime lead with a blocked punt being recovered in the end zone, followed by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Ryder Strother to Austin Hanson. In the third quarter, Colin Bird busted a 60-yard touchdown run, followed by a fumble returned for a touchdown by Brady Harr. To complete the scoring, Brody Strother returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. The Cowboys avoided a shutout with a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown by Charlie Campbell.

Bulldog coach Cole Miller says another strong defensive performance but all units in position for success.

“Our defense played really well again,” Miller says. “They did a great job flying around. They created some turnovers for us and gave us some good field position and then our offense was able to capitalize off of that short field position. When the special teams is getting scores too, that definitely helps the confidence of all phases of the ball. So I think a lot of it comes down to getting some of that game time experience, and then we were just put in great situations by our defense tonight and our special teams. So I think that helped lead to a bunch of scores.”

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows coach Caleb Vogel says there were several missed opportunities.

“It’s tough to swallow for sure,” Vogel says. “Truly thought we were the better team going into the week. And I truly think that even now we’re still the better team. We just shot ourselves in the foot on so many different occasions. We just gotta be able to bounce back from that. We talk about this game being about inches and how toughness, discipline and detail play huge factor in the game of football. That showed that right off the bat last night. So it’s just about coming out fast, just playing Cowboy football is a big thing that we teach here in Clarion and within this program.”

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (1-1) will host Southeast Valley next week. Hampton-Dumont-CAL (2-0) will be at West Marshall next week on 104.9 KLMJ.
