Local teams battled elite competition at AP Volleyball Tournament

Three local volleyball teams competed at Saturday’s annual Aplington-Parkersburg Tournament, where seven of the field’s eight teams were ranked. The #7 (2A) Falcons went 2-2, #14 (2A) Grundy Center went 1-2 and AGWSR went 0-3.

The Falcons began the day with a decisive 2-0 win over AGWSR, 21-7, 21-8. Peyton Klooster led the Falcons with eight kills and Kolbie Wangsness had four aces. Brylea Metzgar had three kills to lead the Cougars.

AP fell 2-1 to #9 (3A) West Delaware, 21-10, 22-24, 19-17. In the closest match of the day, Klooster had 11 kills and Wangsness had 11 digs.

The Falcons fell 2-0 to #1 (1A) Ankeny Christian, 21-17, 21-12. Klooster had five kills and Wangsness had 10 digs.

In their final match of the day, AP defeated Grundy Center 2-1, 24-26, 25-23, 15-12. Klooster led the Falcons with 10 kills; Bella Buseman and Adria Neymeyer each had eight digs. Ryanne Brubaker led the Spartans with nine kills.

In Grundy Center’s opener, they fell 2-0 to #1 (2A) Denver, 21-14, 21-13. Grundy Center defeated #7 (1A) Don Bosco 2-1, 21-15, 18-21, 15-12.

AGWSR fell 2-1 to Ankeny Christian, 21-10, 15-21, 15-6. Brylea Metzgar led with four kills and Tori Metzgar had eight digs.

The Cougars fell 2-1 to Don Bosco, 25-19, 11-25, 15-12. Elise Olson led with 12 kills.
