Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has announced that the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship will again offer its Crop Insurance Discount Program for acres that are planted with cover crops. Farmers and landowners who plant cover crops this fall will have the opportunity to apply for a $5 per acre discount on their spring crop insurance premiums.
Naig says that this program has proven to be successful at encouraging cover crop usage, while helping farmers save money on their crop insurance premiums. He also says that cover crop acres in Iowa are increasing due to benefits including improved water quality, enhanced soil health, and forage for livestock, among various other agronomic advantages.
