The #14 (2A) Grundy Center volleyball team is being tested throughout this early portion of the season with a relatively new-look roster. In starting 7-6 and 1-1 in the NICL-West, the Spartans have had mixed results in numerous close matches. In the last week, 10 of the team’s 15 sets were decided by three or fewer points.
“I tell them whenever we’re in this, I’m like, this is good,” Head Coach Lori Willis says. “We don’t want to just cream people or get creamed, because when you’re in tight matches, you learn a lot. You learn a lot about yourselves. You learn how you respond, and you learn how to really manage the game. And it’s really important for us to come out with victories with these tight sets, because that’s just going to give us confidence, so that when we find ourselves in battles, that we know that we can finish the deal.”
The Spartans have put together some impressive performances led by sophomore middle hitter Ryanne Brubaker, whose 98 kills are the second-most in the West. Her .400 efficiency leads the West, and she’s fourth in the division with 24 blocks.
The Spartans will return to action Thursday by joining #10 (2A) Sumner-Fredericksburg at a triangular at #6 (2A) Dike-New Hartford, which will air on 99 The Wave.
