It’s always a great day to be a Bulldog

Another small look into the life of me, Colt Powers….

I co-coach 7th grade football with coach Bretz and last night was our first middle school game of the ’24/’25 football season and although we didn’t come away with a win on the scoreboard it was a good game and we did come away with a lot of positives. Winning is always more fun, I agree. I also believe you learn more from your losses and Bretz and I are on the same page that at this level development means way more than wins and losses. If youth coaches focus on basic fundamentals and development of players I believe it is more beneficial to the kids when they reach the high school/varsity level, that’s my opinion anyway.

So we’re ready to travel to Humboldt and one of the biggest highlights for me was when the G.O.A.T. himself,  Hall of Famer Coach Jerry Shafrath pulled up with the bus and said he’s driving us to our away games! I have a couple of men in my life that I credit to getting me to where I am in my life, in the order of events the first is Coach Scott Hoegh as he kept me out for football with a simple phone call and that started my high school football career. The second is Coach Shafrath because if it wasn’t for Coach Shafrath and his Sideliner Program I never would have met Coach Dennis Swieter (I may have talked about Sweed a time or two lol). I’m 42 years old and I struggle to call these men by their first names because it feels disrespectful to me so I will always refer to these men as Coach as I hold them in the highest respect as they always coached me to make me a better man. I got my coaching authorization because of these men, I wanted to do my best to give back to the kids in a way that these men helped me and I know I’ll never be able to live up to these men but I’ll dang sure give it my best shot. It really was the best feeling to have my high school coach watching a game that I’m now helping to coach and then be able to talk to him and pick his brain a little after the game.

One of the best times of my day is when I’m coaching and I always love game day because we can see how we have progressed through the week but I gotta tell ya, having Coach Shaf at games makes it a little more special for me so regardless of wins or losses, It’s always a great day to be a Bulldog!
