Three of the best volleyball teams in Class 2A will meet Thursday in a North Iowa Cedar League triangular at Dike-New Hartford. The #6 (2A) Wolverines will host #14 (2A) Grundy Center and #10 (2A) Sumner-Fredericksburg in matches that’ll air on 99 The Wave.
The Wolverines (5-8, 1-0 NICL-C) have had over a week off since their last outing, a 3-1 win over #7 (2A) Aplington-Parkersburg on Tuesday, September 10. DNH is finding their stride with a new-look team, according to Head Coach Diane Harms.
“We need to communicate a little quicker, just work on some things so we can just clean up a few balls that we mishandled here and there and just keep working forward,” Harms says. “I think the progress we’ve made from the start of the season to now is good. We’ve just got to keep working and keep trying to strive to get better and better every time we step on the court.”
Izzy Norton leads with 95 kills and the team has a division-leading 95.9 serve percentage.
Grundy Center (7-6, 1-1 NICL-W) is coming off a 1-3 performance at Saturday’s tournament at Aplington-Parkersburg, where they were tested with exclusively ranked competition. They’ve made adjustments with a new-look offense, and are one of the league’s better blocking teams with just over two per set.
Sumner-Fredericksburg (10-3, 2-0 NICL-E) enters with possibly the most momentum among the three teams. In their last outing, they defeated #13 (2A) Wapsie Valley 3-0 on Tuesday, September 10. Brielle Volker leads the East with 148 kills, and the most per set in the conference.
Grundy Center will take on Sumner-Fredericksburg in the opener, followed by the Cougars taking on Dike-New Hartford. The Wolverines and Spartans will meet in the night’s final match. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:20 p.m., followed by the first serve at 5:30.
