The North Butler football team after two game homestand is back on the road, to take on Wapsie Valley in Class A-District 3 action on Friday. The Bearcats will be on the hunt for their first ever win against Wapsie Valley.
North Butler (2-1, 0-1 district) got back on track with a 36-14 homecoming win over West Fork last week. The Bearcats lead their district in passing yards with 462 and rank third in rushing with 575 yards. Brody Wangsness leads with 462 passing yards and four total touchdowns, Jax Thorne has been a solid receiving target with 10 receptions for 84 yards.
North Butler Head Coach Jordan Vanderloop on keys for the Bearcats and limiting Warriors dual-threat quarterback Kanen Decker.
“A big physical team that’ll come out, and they’re not scared to hit you, they’ll come out and have their way with you if you don’t stay disciplined and do your job,” says Vanderloop. “We need to make sure that offensively, we have a hat on a hat, and if we can find a hole to take advantage of it. Defensively, we have to make sure we limit the big gains for them. A big threat, so you have to make sure you keep him in the pocket and don’t let him scramble. When we keep him back there, we have got to get him uncomfortable. Very talented player, so we need to make sure we put some pressure on him and keep him contained so he can’t make some plays with his legs or his arm.”
Wapsie Valley (2-1,1-0 district) won 35-14 at South Winneshiek in their district opener last week. The Warriors have the second most rushing yards in the district with 758. Kanen Decker with 250 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and Garrett Miller with 216 rushing yards and six touchdowns for the Warriors put defenses to the test.
Wapsie Valley won last year’s meeting 19-0 in Greene.
Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. at Wapsie Valley.
