The Hampton-Dumont-CAL football team was in a tight game early but Nevada was able to pull away with a big offensive fourth quarter for a 41-21 win in non-district finale on Friday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.

Nevada scored first on a quick air strike from 52 yards for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs evened the score at 7-7, as Colin Bird found a lane down the right seam for a 21 yard touchdown reception, with just under eight minutes left in the first half. The Cubs on a five minute drive retook the lead at 14-7 just before halftime. Nevada extended their lead to 21-7 on their opening drive of the third quarter. Colin Bird found paydirt for his second touchdown of the night, with a four yard rush to get the Bulldogs within 21-14 late in the third. The Cubs put the game away by outsourcing the Bulldogs three touchdowns to one in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs score in the fourth was Brady Harr’s first receiving touchdown of the season.

H-D-CAL Head Coach Cole Miller on the pace of play and positive takeaways.

Very physical football game overall. Both teams battled really hard until the end. The scoreboard doesn’t really show the type of game it was. They got a couple of ones at the end that ended up widening the margin a little bit,” says Miller. “Our boys battled hard, and I’m proud of their effort and the way they didn’t quit until the very end. I think they can take away that they’re a physical football team, and that there’s not a whole lot of times we’re going to get outworked on the football field. We’re becoming better offensively, more two-dimensional. That’s going to be huge for us down the stretch if we can keep building on that as well.”

Ryder Strother went 7-18 for 83 passing yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Colin Bird rushed for 47 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing and one receiving) to lead the Bulldogs.

H-D-CAL at 2-2 will host Humboldt for homecoming and district opener on Friday.
