Grundy Center Football notches 30th consecutive victory

When the #1 (1A) Grundy Center football team defeated East Marshall 42-6 at home Friday night, the program recorded a remarkable achievement. It was the program’s 30th consecutive victory, dating to the beginning of the 2022 season. Coach Travis Zajac doesn’t necessarily focus on these kinds of streaks, but is grateful to be part of a growing tradition of excellence.

“I think it’s important to the kids to see that it’s just focused on the next, but you can’t help but just be really, really grateful for the opportunity to be here,” Zajac says. “Just a lot of outstanding players, and players whose parents and families understand what it takes and the amount of effort and time, the level of care that you have to have in order to sustain success over time. And having the best coaching staff in the state regardless of class, those guys do all the work. Without them, none of this is possible. And I’m a very grateful person right now. I’m very happy for our community. It’s another landmark on this pretty incredible journey we’ve been on here over the last five plus seasons.”

During the win streak, only three of the games have been decided by one possession.

The Spartans would need nine more wins to rank in the top 10 of longest win streaks in IHSAA history. The longest streak is tied between Iowa City Regina and Waterloo East, each of which recorded 56 consecutive wins.

The Spartans (4-0, 1-0 1A-4) will host Columbus Catholic Friday on 99 The Wave, a rematch of last year’s semifinal game.
