The Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Belmond-Klemme cross country teams will be among schools of varying sizes at Tuesday’s Riverhawk Invitational hosted by Mason City.
Hampton-Dumont-CAL coach Traci Moorehead on how her team can compete, especially when pushed by large school competition.
“Really trying to compete, but also trying to just get kids to be a part of an activity and try new things,” Moorehead says. “Cross Country, it’s not like any other sport. It’s quite amazing if you ever go to a meet. People are cheering for both teams and it’s just quite amazing. So even if you’re the last person that crosses the finish line, that could still be a PR for you and you’re excited.”
The Bulldogs had one varsity PR at last week’s Clear Lake Invitational, Brooklyn Valley’s 25:21 finish.
Familiar opponents include Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, Newman Catholic and Webster City. Des Moines North, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Waterloo East and Waverly-Shell Rock will also be in attendance.
The first varsity race will be at 6:15 p.m.
