The Iowa Falls-Alden football team will look to win its second straight game when it hosts Vinton-Shellsburg in its first district home game Friday.

After an 0-3 non-district schedule in which they were shut out every game, the Cadets used a strong rushing attack to defeat Union 14-7 last week to move to 1-3 and 1-0 in 2A-6. Head Coach Eric Walkingstick on bouncing back.

“The non-district is great, it’s nice, but the experience is what it is for us,” Walkingstick says. “District play, that’s the crucial part. We have to piece together wins. Point margins are going to be huge and every little positive can get you to the playoffs and that’s the goal. That’s what everybody wants to do, get back to the playoffs and set us up and see what happens once we get there. Once you get to the playoffs, you never know what happens. Big for us to take that first big step.”

Sophomore quarterback Cade Olberding rushed for 151 yards and both touchdowns, along with 76 passing yards.

“He is a tremendous athlete and we knew that his strength was running the ball. The O-line did a great job of blocking for him. The receivers did a good job of blocking for him as well. It’s never one guy doing it, but he is a gifted athlete. He did a great job. He kind of had a breakout game and kind of put the team on his back a little bit, did some really great things.”

Vinton-Shellsburg (0-4, 0-1 2A-6) has not been competitive, and fell 44-3 at home to West Marshall in last week’s district opener. They’ve been held to just 516 total yards while being trounced by opposing offenses.

The Cadets won the meeting 43-0 last year. The kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. at Cadet Field.
