The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team will look to secure its first Class 2A District 2 win of the season when they host Estherville-Lincoln Central on Friday. The Cowboys will also look for their first win in the series since 2014.
C-G-D (1-3, 0-1 2A-2) lost their district opener 21-0 at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura last week. The Cowboys were limited to 189 total yards (165 rushing, 24 passing) in the shutout loss.
Cowboys Head Coach Caleb Vogel on finishing drives with scores and defensive assignments.
“We’re gonna have the mindset that, we have got to score, we’re down here and nothing else matters. We gotta get in here any way possible that we can and put points on the board. We made a huge emphasis on that all week,” says Vogel. ” Then defensively do our assignments, whatever coverage we’re in, whatever stunts we got, we just gotta do our job. Continue to play fast on defense and rally to the ball.”
The Cowboys will look to start generating points again with the return of starting dual-threat quarterback JD Morrical from illness and the run support of Charlie Campbell (319 yards) and Selvin Gonzalez (184 yards). The Cowboys lead the district in rushing yards with 763.
ELC (0-4, 0-1 district) lost their district opener 40-19 at home to Okoboji last week. ELC is looking to break out of its slump after being held to 20 points or less and giving up 34 points or more during the first four weeks. Layton Yager guides ELC with 513 passing yards, 105 rushing yards, and six total touchdowns.
ELC won last year’s meeting 31-14 at home.
