On a night where the North Butler volleyball team honored those who have and are currently battling breast cancer, the Bearcats earned a 3-0 home sweep of West Fork in a Top of Iowa-East match Tuesday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ. The set scores were 25-12, 25-21, 25-20.
In the first set, North Butler took control from the start and cruised to the night’s most lopsided set win. In set 2, the Bearcats scored six straight for a 6-2 lead. West Fork battled back for their only lead of the night, and was four points from tying the match at 1-1 with a 21-19 lead. But North Butler scored six straight to take a 2-0 lead. In the third set, the Warhawks made it interesting after the Bearcats scored the first nine points, but North Butler settled in and got the sweep.
“The girls have been working so hard and we’ve just fallen short in so many matches,” Head Coach Sarah Goodrich says. “So it just feels good to be on top, and it was kind of a revenge match because we’ve already played West Fork once at a tournament and we lost in three sets. So it just feels good to get the conference win. Tonight is just such a special night for North Butler Volleyball with our breast cancer awareness night. It’s just amazing, the community that comes out to support us, and for us to give the game to something way bigger than that and give it to those that have fought, survived, and battled breast cancer. It’s an event that really hits hard to our heart as our current assistant coach, Coach Thompson, and our former head coach, Coach Osterbuhr, have both battled breast cancer themselves. So it was more than just the game of volleyball tonight.”
Addison Ulrich led the Bearcats with seven kills. Colby Wix and Olivia Dralle each had five kills. The team had 11 aces.
Leah Weaver led West Fork with five kills.
North Butler (4-16, 2-5 TOI-E) will return to action Saturday at a tournament at Oelwein. West Fork (5-8, 2-3 TOI-E) will host Nashua-Plainfield on Tuesday, October 8.
