The AGWSR football team will face possibly its toughest test of the season when it travels to Wapsie Valley Friday.

The Cougars (1-4, 1-3 A-3) will look to bounce back from three straight losses, a streak that has included three touchdowns in games that were decided early. They’ll look to continue making progress in a revamped offense, which has generated less than 1,000 total yards through the first five games. The team’s playoff fate is on the line; a fourth district loss would almost certainly prevent the Cougars from making the playoffs.

“Nobody’s expecting us to win Friday,” Head Coach James Koop says. “People are going to look at the records and say this game is going to be done early Friday night. And as I told our players, if you don’t believe you can compete with them, that’s what’s going to happen. So I think the biggest thing this week is you’ve got to believe you can compete with them. As a defensive coach, I’m going to look at North Tama’s film and figure out what they did to be successful against them. You can see what frustrations they caused Wapsie Valley. And then, if you get a few breaks with the ball bouncing your way, maybe put a little fear of God in them, put a little scare in them and see what you can do in the fourth quarter, if you can keep it close to the first three quarters.”

Wapsie Valley (3-2, 2-1 A-3) is coming off its lone district loss, 22-13 at North Tama last week. Kanen Decker is the quarterback of a run-heavy team, and leads in rushing yards and carries.

The Warriors won 55-0 last year. The kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
