The Hampton-Dumont-CAL football team will go for its first district win when it visits Webster City Friday, a game that’ll air on 104.9 KLMJ.

The Bulldogs (2-3, 0-1 3A-2) are hoping to bounce back after last week’s 28-10 loss to Humboldt, where coach Cole Miller saw some key possibilities for growth. The team spread out 36 carries for 152 rushing yards. Miller says this could be a big week for the running game.

“With them packing it so close to the line of scrimmage, there’s gonna be some seams,” Miller says. “If we can get through that first level, then our backs have shown that they have the capability to take it to the house. So we’re hoping to block a clean game up front, open up a couple of seams and hopefully rip off a few big ones. And then we need to keep them off balance, be able to hit some screens and throw our quick to intermediate game so they can’t just pin their ears back and then try and stop the run. So that’ll be huge for us on offense.”

Colin Bird has had two 100-plus yard rushing performances, in Week 1 and 3.

Webster City (1-4, 0-1 3A-2) has stumbled to a slow start under first-year head coach Andy Brim. However, the Lynx still use the single-wing offense, a run-heavy system that has only thrown 20 passes all season. Miller on the defensive preparation.

“They have a lot of eye candy with their plays, so they’re trying to misdirection you, get your eyes on the wrong spot. But if we stay disciplined and we look at who we know we’re supposed to be looking at and reading the keys that we know are going to tell us what’s going on, then we should be pretty successful. So discipline on defense is going to be huge. And then just rallying into the ball and making gang tackles, as we say every week, is going to be a big thing for us.”

Webster City won last year’s meeting 35-6.

Pregame coverage will begin at 6:15 p.m. with the Roling Ford Road to the Dome Warmup Show, followed by the kickoff at 7:00.
