The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team will face off against Okoboji in a wild west showdown in Class 2A District 2 on Friday. It will also be CGD’s senior night as they recognize eight seniors.
This will only be the second meeting between the Cowboys and the Pioneers since 2009, as CGD won last year’s meeting 55-27.
CGD (1-5, 0-3 2A-2) lost in a one score district game 22-14 at Forest City last week. The Cowboys will look to get offense going after being held to 14 points or less over the last four games. The run game has allowed the offense to get established with 972 rushing yards. Senior Charlie Campbell leads with 387 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
CGD Head Coach Caleb Vogel on senior night and defensive response to a balanced Pioneer offense.
“We have got to be fundamentally sound this week going into the game. Then play this game for the seniors, It’s the last time they’re going to step on their home field,” says Vogel. Having Okoboji drive over two hours to get here, you got to take that and use that as an advantage. I’m super excited about this matchup. I think it’s fun that we have teams that are able to just throw the rock and our DB’s go to work. Our D line can create pressure to make the quarterback uncomfortable. It’s going to be a good game.”
Okoboji (4-2, 2-1 2A-2) won 34-12 over Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in district play last week. A balanced Pioneer offense runs through senior dual-threat quarterback Landon Duvall with 1,087 passing yards, 314 rushing yards and 20 total touchdowns. The Pioneers defense has allowed under 20 points in two of three district games.
Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. in Clarion.
