Mason City man sent to federal prison

A 24-year-old Mason City man was sentenced this week in U-S Federal Court at Sioux City after he entered a guilty plea in May to one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and to one count of possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance.

Tirrell Harlan Hopkins, Junior admitted that on November 18th, 2023, he knowingly possessed a firearm, a pistol, and at the time he possessed the gun, he knew he was a user of illegal drugs, had been convicted of a felony, and convicted of a crime of domestic violence.

He also admitted that he was in possession of meth, and intended to distribute some or all of it to another person.

Hopkins was sentenced to 98 months in federal prison, and must also serve a 6-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
