Greene Mayor Warren Van Dyke told the city council this week that the city was awarded a DNR Derelict grant to remove the asbestos in the former elementary school building, with the grant paying for the total removal.

The work should be done sometime this winter.

An organization out of Des Moines has been looking at reconstructing and remodeling the former school building into apartments.

In other business, Van Dyke requested the city council along with members of the city pool board to brainstorm on ways to cut back and save.

He says the city is having to spend more and more every year, which puts a big dent in the city’s general revenue fund.

This year the swimming pool cost the city over $46,200.
