The Aplington-Parkersburg football team was held off the board in the second half, and Sumner-Fredericksburg took advantage of opportunities to defeat the Falcons 47-13 Friday at Ed Thomas Field in Week 8.

The Falcons scored late in the first quarter on a quarterback sneak by Benny Waller for a 6-0 lead. Waller found Maddox Kruger for a 12-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, but the Cougars responded with three scores in the second quarter for a 19-13 halftime lead.

Interim coach Aaron Thomas says Sumner-Fredericksburg’s offense became tough to defend in the second half.

“Started the third quarter, and Coach Heuer thought we could go onside kick, and we got that right away and marched it down,” Thomas says. “Unfortunately turned it over with a fumble on about the 15. And that took a lot of air out of our sails. We weren’t able to sustain some other drives and they got a couple of long broken plays, long plays where the quarterback just scrambled and guys got open. It was a long time to cover, and we missed a couple of tackles. And then it got away from us a little bit in the fourth quarter. But you know, saw a lot more fight from our guys when we got down those two scores with Sumner-Fredericksburg scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter. To score right before half was a big step for us. And unfortunately we just couldn’t capitalize in the second half.”

Waller was 11/22 for 96 passing yards with a touchdown and an interception. Mason Pruisner had 14 carries for 63 yards and Devan Eberhart had 20 carries for 62 yards. Kruger had five receptions for 57 yards.

AP has finished the regular season at 2-6 and 2-3 in 1A District 3. They’ll be at #4 (1A) Wilton in next week’s first round of the playoffs on 99 The Wave.
