The AGWSR volleyball team will look for the upset at a familiar NICL contender in #1 (2A) Denver in a Class 2A Region 1 quarterfinal on Wednesday. The match will air on 104.9 KLMJ.
AGWSR (14-25) advanced with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-22) win over North Butler in the first round on Monday. The Cougars received balanced scoring in the win over the Bearcats, as four different hitters had five kills or more, led by Josie Kuper with seven. Trevyn Smith added 20 assists to help lift the offense in the win. The Cougars defense has challenged attackers at the net with an NICL-West best 67 solo blocks.

“We have talked about coming in on Wednesday, regardless of the outcome, we want to go out, we want to fight for every single point. We want to feel good when we leave the floor that we left it all out there,” says Smith. “If Denver walks away with the win, we want them to have to earn it. We want them to have to beat us. That’s really going to be our mindset is going in and battling one point at a time and then let the chips fall as they may.”
Denver (41-3) received a first round bye and will play its first match since a 3-0 win over #10 (2A) Grundy Center in regular season finale on Tuesday, October 15. Channing Johnson has been the center of the Cyclones’ offense with 1,008 assists (most in 2A). Bailey Mullihan has been tough to stop along the Cyclones’ front line with 414 kills at four kills per set.
Pre-match coverage on 104.9 KLMJ begins at 6:40 p.m. followed by the first serve at 7:00 p.m. in Denver.
The winner will advance to face either Central Springs or West Fork in a regional semifinal on Monday, October 28th.
