The AGWSR volleyball team kept each set close, but #1 (2A) Denver went on timely runs to keep the advantage, winning 3-0 in a Class 2A Region 1 quarterfinal on Wednesday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ. The Cyclones won by set scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-14.

In Set 1, Denver led 9-4, maintained a four point lead to 20-15, and went on a 5-1 run to clinch the set. In Set 2, Denver led 11-8, then went on a 7-3 run to go up 18-11 and matched a six-point AGWSR rally with one of their own to go up 2-0 in the match. Set 3 was the most competitive of the match, with seven different ties, including a 12-12 tie; Denver outscored the Cougars 13-2 to close out the win.

AGWSR Head Coach Jill Smith on the impact of eight seniors and making in-game adjustments against the Cyclones.

“It’s hard with the last match with your seniors they’ve put a lot into our program and they’ve worked hard for four years. Some seniors are on the floor all the time and I have some that are not on the floor all the time but their impact on our program and our team has been very big,” says Smith. “The adjustments that I thought we made, our kids did a great job, I thought we fought really hard.  Denver obviously is a very solid team, top to bottom. Unforced errors will kill you because they don’t make very many errors. We knew that coming in, but again, I’m just really proud of our effort and the adjustments that we made throughout the match.”

Brylea Metzgar had six kills and Josie Kuper added four to lead the Cougars.

AGWSR ends the year at 14-26 overall.
