The Hampton-Dumont-CAL football team was unable to generate enough offense in the second half, and was defeated 31-6 at home by #4 (3A) Algona in Friday’s regular season finale.
In the first quarter, Hampton-Dumont-CAL answered an Algona touchdown on a nine-yard quarterback keeper, and got to within 7-6 after a missed extra point. HDCAL’s defense held strong until Algona added a score just before half. But Head Coach Cole Miller says some mistakes in the second half became too much to overcome.
“Our defense played really well all night,” Miller says. “They were flying around, making plays, and doing their best to keep them out of the end zone. And our offense played well at times, but it was kind of the same story of a lot of our games of the season, we get something going and then we do something to shoot ourselves in the foot, get behind the sticks or fumble ball, or throw an errant pass or something like that. But you know, we did some things really well on offense at times. We just couldn’t do it efficiently enough to be successful on offense, and they kind of just wore us down on defense. Our kids battled to the very end and like they always do, they play hard, and I’m proud of those guys.”
Hampton-Dumont-CAL has finished the season 3-6.
