As harvest season concludes, farmers need to be making their fertilizer plans for the next growing season.
This is ISU Extension Field Agronomist Angie Rieck-Hinz.
“Take a look at where your yields were this year. In the very least, maybe replace the nutrients that were removed. And I can help you do that. Iowa State has a book that shows you what nutrient removal rates are. Your co-op retailer can help you with that. But let’s replace the nutrients that were removed this year. And then if our soil tests are a little lower than they should be, we always put on a little extra. So we slowly build that soil capacity up to supply nutrients. And maybe if you’re on the other end of the spectrum and your soil tests are high or very high categories given the fact that our crop prices aren’t all that good right now, maybe you can pull back a little bit on your fertilizer inputs and save some dollars that way.”
Cerro Gordo County Extension will be hosting a Fertility and Finance Workshop that is scheduled for November 19th.
The workshop will lead farmers through the basics of soil testing, analytical tests, calculating crop nutrient removal, understanding return on investment from fertilizer applications, and more.
