South Hardin surges to state appearance, wins regional final over Grundy Center

The #6 (2A) South Hardin volleyball team is heading to the state tournament for the first time since 2021, having defeated #10 (2A) Grundy Center 3-1 in Wednesday’s 2A Region 6 Final at Union. The Tigers won 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-8.

In the first set, Grundy Center had the momentum, and held off four straight South Hardin points near the end to hold on for a 1-0 lead. In the second set, Grundy Center led 11-6, but the Tigers used an 8-2 run to come back and win by the slimmest of margins to tie the match at 1-1. In the third set, Grundy Center was unable to hold onto a 10-6 lead, and a nine-point run gave the Tigers momentum on their way to a 2-1 lead. It was all South Hardin in set 4, scoring 12 of the first 13 points to sprint their way to the state tournament.

Alli Sheldahl had 13 kills; Ava Salvo and Emma Minteer each had 11. The Tigers (26-8) are the #6-seed in the Class 2A State Tournament, and will take on #3-seed Beckman Catholic in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, November 5 at 4:25 p.m.

Grundy Center has ended its season at 25-16.
