Coming off a state tournament appearance, the Grundy Center girls basketball team will have four starters to replace this season.

The Spartans will need to replace 73 percent of last year’s scoring, and Head Coach Matt Lindeman says a large portion of the scoring could come from the post. He says senior Paige Venenga will be one of the mainstays as the only senior with significant varsity experience.

“Paige saw some good time last year as a junior,” Lindeman says. “Karlee Lynch, Kali Aldrich, both of them have played since freshmen, so they’ve had two years of experience and come in now as juniors. Karlee can play anywhere from the one to two and three, and Kali’s a one and a two, and just really provides good energy and so forth. Ava Mundt came in and she saw a little bit of time at different times last year as a big, and so Paige and Ava will become more of the mainstays now in our bigs. And then we have a number of youngsters, whether it’s sophomores, freshmen, there are opportunities there, and we’ll see what we can do and how deep we can go.”

Venenga didn’t start, but appeared in all but one game. She shot 50 percent, tied for the best percentage on last year’s team. Karlee Lynch is the leading returning scorer with 4.4 points per game last year, and junior Kali Aldrich is the lone returning starter.

They’ll begin the season Monday, November 25 by hosting BCLUW.
