With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, area law enforcement departments are urging drivers to remember that throughout Thanksgiving gatherings to be mindful that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.

During Thanksgiving in 2022, 184 people died in drunk driving crashes across the United States.  And over the past five years, Thanksgiving festivities have contributed to 833 drunk driving deaths, that’s 34 percent of all Thanksgiving traffic fatalities.

In Iowa, 5 traffic fatalities occurred during the Thanksgiving holiday week in 2023.

Traffic enforcement efforts in the coming days will be focused on reducing excessive speed, minimizing distracted driving, and removing drunk and drug-impaired drivers from the road.
