Mitch and I were talking about popular pies for Thanksgiving this morning.  I brought up the old tradition of cheese and apple pie.  He had never heard of it, while I have.  My mom told me her grandparents would like it that way, and she enjoys it as well.  I had to look up the origins.  It seems to have originated in 17th century England, where bakers would often top pies with dairy based sauces like custard.  Some bakers even used Wensleydale cheese on top of apple pie.  Cheddar was the natural next step. It was the early settlers that brought the tradition the America.  It became a tradition in areas with dairy farming.  Still popular in the Northeast and Midwest.  Some folks will bake the cheese into the crust of their apple pies, while others like a melted slice as a topping. Do you like apple pie with cheese?  I will try it at Thanksgiving and report back.
