Firefighters were on the scene of a large hay bale fire west of Alden along Hardin County Highway D-20 for over 24 hours. No injuries reported.
Alden Fire Department Spokesman Jeff Fiscus tells RadioOnTheGo News that his department first received the call from Summit Farms located west of Alden about 2am Wednesday. During that time, fire departments from Bradford, Blairsburg, New Providence, Hubbard, Dows, Buckeye, Williams, and Iowa Falls were called in to help with manpower and water. Fiscus estimates that water brought from Alden, including from the Iowa River and the town’s water supply, along with water from Iowa Falls, and from a large tank at the scene totaled 250-thousand gallons.
Summit Farms brought in heavy equipment that helped firefighters put out the fire that was in two large stacks of hay bales along with a smaller stack. Another large stack did not catch on fire, but it is almost one quarter of a mile long. The cause is under investigation, and no dollar amount has been given for the loss of the hay.
