The AGWSR girls basketball team used an overpowering defensive performance to roll to a 55-28 win at Madrid in Friday’s season opener.

The Cougars created some separation in the second quarter as the shooting heated up for a 27-18 halftime lead. But it got no closer. In the second half, AGWSR remained consistent on offense, but forced numerous turnovers on the defensive end, allowing the margin to gradually extend.

“Giving up 10 points in the second half on any night is awesome, and we’ll take that for sure,” Head Coach David Koop says. “And our scoring was pretty consistent throughout. I mean, we scored 27 in the first half and 28 in the second half. You get right around that 50 to 60 mark any night, you’re going to have a lot of success. And I thought we played pretty well. Josie Kuper did a great job posting up tonight. Trevyn Smith did good facilitating from the point guard position. Tori Metzgar, in her first game back after not playing for two years, was our leading rebounder tonight, which was awesome to see. She had five or six offensive rebounds. Piper Smith knocked down some pretty huge threes. I mean, we would get up eight, nine, ten points and then that one three Piper hit got to 13 and then from there on out, we kind of just started to extend, and it was a good night to be a Cougar.”

Josie Kuper led with 20 points and Trevyn Smith added 16. Tori Metzgar had a team-high 11 rebounds.

AGWSR (1-0) will return to action Tuesday at BCLUW.
