The Iowa Falls-Alden boys basketball team will begin its season by hosting West Marshall in non-conference action Monday.

Under first-year head coach Mike Holm, the Cadets will look to make strides from last year’s 6-17 season. Four players who started at least five games will be back, and Holm says some depth will be built with new rotation players.

“Nathan Roeske will step in and spell us at the guard spot, who does a solid job,” Holm says. “Cam Madden will step in, not big, but I always call Cam he’s our 40-year-old guy in an 18-year-old body. The way he plays is like an old guy. He’s been around for a while, very fundamentally sound. So he’ll give us some good minutes. Jackson Thiesen is another one who’s got good size and good length and very athletic. So we’re gonna count on him a little bit. And we’ve got a host of sophomores too that’ll step in and help us when we need it.”

Those with starting experience include Kale Kalous, Karsen Kalous, Calvin Hutchinson and Carter DeBates. Holm says Carson Allen is likely to take the last starting position after appearing in seven games last year. Kale Kalous is the top returning scorer after averaging 9.7 points per game last year.

West Marshall is coming off a 5-16 season, but their lineup is expected to include five of last year’s rotation players, including 9.4 points per game scorer Cash Johnston.

The tipoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
