The Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams earned a home sweep of Sumner-Fredericksburg in the first doubleheader of the season Tuesday. The girls won 59-28 and the boys won 79-60.
In the girls game, the Falcons started hot and led the entire game. They scored the game’s first 15 points, holding the Cougars off the board until 6:40 left in the second quarter. The lead grew to as many as 25 in the first half, and it was 30-8 at halftime. With the game in hand, the Falcons hit a bit of a cool stretch in the third quarter, but managed to increase the lead to the final margin. Eva Walker led with 13 points and Peyton Klooster scored 12. AP is now 1-1.
The boys game was a tale of two halves. Sumner-Fredericksburg scored the first five points, and led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. The teams traded scoring runs in the second quarter, and it was tied at 33 going into halftime. The Falcons scored the first five points of the second half and never trailed again, and blew the game open with 28 points in the fourth quarter, and held the Cougars to their lowest-scoring quarter with 12. Benny Waller led with 22 points. Mason Ridder scored 16 and Caleb Campbell added 13, moving the Falcons to 1-0.
Both teams will return to action Thursday at Oelwein on 99 The Wave.
