Dike-New Hartford beginning wrestling season Thursday

The Dike-New Hartford boys wrestling team will open its season Thursday with a North Iowa Cedar League triangular, where they’ll host Hudson and Oelwein.

The Wolverines have had a bit of a slower start to their season due to the football team playing in the state championship game. However, Head Coach Tony Norton says progress is imminent with an underclassman-heavy roster. Last year’s lone state qualifier, Zach Adelmund, graduated. But Norton says some key returners will take larger leadership roles this year.

“Jake Reicks looks good, Tate DeBuhr, Jace Aneweer, some of our seniors,” Norton says. “And then some of our juniors are making pretty good progress too. You know, Dax Weedman, the Haugen twins, Lane Girsch, you know, those are some of our juniors too. We’re a little thin on the juniors and senior ends, but again, they look pretty good. I’m not sure what weight everybody’s going to be at, if everybody’s going to be down this first week. So we still got a lot of question marks we’re figuring out. We’re just not quite there yet. We’re going to go ahead on Thursday night and wrestle Hudson and Oelwein and build, and make a little bit better decisions, and then where we think everybody should fit. We’re going to do our best to get our best 14 guys out on the mat and put out a fun product for everybody to watch.”

It’ll also be the season opener for Hudson and Oelwein. Action will begin at 6:15 p.m.
