The Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams will play on the road for the first time this season when they travel to Oelwein Thursday for a conference crossover doubleheader. It’ll air on 99 The Wave.
The Falcon boys (1-0) started their season with Tuesday’s 79-60 win over Sumner-Fredericksburg, where they used a 28-point fourth quarter to create separation after a close start. They started the season crisp, shooting 49 percent and committing only five turnovers. Oelwein (0-1) is coming off a 70-62 loss at South Hardin Tuesday, but boasts one of the better players in the league. Head Coach Aaron Thomas says defending Conall Sauser will be a key.
“We get Oelwein on Thursday followed by Webster City, and Oelwein has a really good runner who’s also their best basketball player, big, strong, physical kid,” Thomas says. “They had some guards that got better as the year went last year that are back. So they’ve probably got more back than we do. So we’re going to have to be ready to go. Luckily, they played one ahead of us so we’ll be able to get a scout of what they’re doing, what they’re running. Last year they played some man-and-zone so we’re not certain what we’ll see there.”
Sauser averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds last year.
The Falcon girls (1-1) bounced back with Tuesday’s 59-28 win over Sumner-Fredericksburg, where they created opportunities with 21 steals. Peyton Klooster and Kolbie Wangsness have been the scoring leaders, each with 11.5 points per game. Oelwein (0-3) has been blown out in each game, including a 72-39 loss at South Hardin Tuesday.
Pregame coverage will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by the tipoff at 6:15.
