The #14 (2A) Hampton-Dumont-CAL boys wrestling team will compete at the Dan Gable Donnybrook Tournament Friday and Saturday at Xtream Arena. It’s a premier tournament featuring schools from across the Midwest. Each weight class features a 32-person bracket.
Head Coach Patrick Hansen looks forward to facing elite competition.
“I look at some of those teams, and I was Googling them when we were there,” Hansen says. “And I’m like, ‘holy crap, the closest school to us was Waverly-Shell Rock.’ Like, Mount Carmel High School was like 1,600 kids per class. So we’re in a tournament with these guys that have all Division I guys. That’s cool. It’s what we go there for. You wrestle some guys. You can’t just stay in this small little pond and then think that you’re a big fish. You gotta go out, figure out where you’re at in the world, what it is, try to keep eating bigger fish than you. It’s not a sprint. It’s not a 100 yard dash. This is a two-mile run. So right now we lost the first 100 meters. What are we going to do with the rest of it? And I believe in our kids. I believe in our program. I believe what we’re doing.”
Last season, the Bulldogs placed 27th and had 10 placewinners.
It’ll be the second event of the season; the Bulldogs dropped a home dual to #4 (1A) Lake Mills Monday.
The two-day tournament will begin Friday at 11:30 a.m.
