The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows boys wrestling team will take the mat in competition space for the first time in 2024-2025 season by taking part in Cliff Keen Invite hosted by Independence on Friday and Saturday.

C-G-D Head Coach Dillon Anderson on what the tournament provides as a season opening event and in-match strategy of wrestlers this season.

“That one is a really big tournament with a whole bunch of teams and a lot of really good wrestlers. It’s a really good way to start out the season, to get one, a lot of matches, but two, some really good competition,” says Anderson. “Our mentality is to go out there and score points in all positions. If we have an opportunity to put them on their back, we got to put them away and finish the match. We’re always looking to score points, even if you’re up by eight, 10 points, or if you’re winning by one or two points, we’re looking to open up the match. Hopefully we’ll be attacking and hopefully getting a lot of bonus points this year, that’s the goal always.”

C-G-D returns multi-year state qualifiers in Ryan Hartwig at 120 and Caleb Seaba at 165, followed by a hungry group of younger wrestlers.

It is a large tournament featuring 31 teams representing all three wrestling classes in Iowa and one team from Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Day one of the tournament begins at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, day two begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Independence.
