The Grundy Center boys basketball team will host a non-conference game against Charles City Monday.

The Spartans (3-0) are coming off a 63-42 win at South Hardin Friday to open NICL-West action. That night, they used a stifling defensive effort in the second quarter, where they held the Tigers to just five points to gain the advantage. Head Coach Brent Thoren says it’ll be a short turnaround.

“A 3A opponent that traditionally has been very good at basketball, that’ll be a big challenge for us on a quick turnaround and a short scouting report for that,” Thoren says. “You’re dealing with a lot of tempo and athleticism, and we’re having to play ourselves in the game shape right now, so it’ll be a good challenge for us in regards to leading into the holiday break, just because we have such a heavy workload coming out of the break. Really excited where we’re at as a team right now, but we obviously are gonna get everyone’s best shot. If we’re going to accomplish some of our goals that we’ve set out for us this year, whether it be conference or postseason, these games are really important and are gonna shape us to the best possible team we can be.”

Jalen Kirkpatrick leads with 21.5 points per game, the best in the NICL-West.

Charles City (2-2) is coming off Friday’s 67-66 win at Crestwood. Three players average double figure scoring, led by 14 points per game by Victor Ward.
The tipoff will be at 7:45 p.m.
