Tuesday, North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City hosted approximately 800 area 8th graders from area schools as part of Discover Day. Professionals from around the area were invited to provide interactive or visual activities that showcased something about their jobs and fields of industry.
Presenters met with about 160 students each, selected based on an interest profile for each of the kids. The areas of interest included realistic, investigative, social, artistic, enterprising and conventional.
The event is intended to provide students with an opportunity to examine interests and explore real careers in North Iowa. NIACC intends for these events to teach 8th graders that there are more potential careers than they know about and these careers can be fulfilling when they are able to match their skills and interests.
OnTheGoMedia President and General Manager Shawn Dietz presented at the event and demonstrated how advertisements are produced to be aired on the radio. Other topics included piano, banking, law enforcement, agronomy, entrepreneurship along with several variations of health care and education.
